Holi is a religious festival celebrated by Hindus all over the world. Holi is considered as second biggest festival on Hindu calendar after Diwali. Holi is also known as festival of Colors. The festival of Holi is celebrated on the day after the full moon in early March every year. It is also known as the Festival of Colors. Holi celebrates spring, fertility, good harvests, and the return of bright colors after the drabness of winter. Holi is an important festival observed across the whole India, a variety of activities are held during it. Generally speaking the festive air in North India, especially in the Golden Triangle Tourist Circuit (Delhi, Jaipur, Agra) is more vivid and jubilant than that in southern part of India, which is quite solemn and more focused on religion and temple rituals.

There is a symbolic legend to explain why Holi is celebrated as a festival of colors. There are many stories of the origin of Holi. Some involve the demon King Hiranyakashyap and his sister, Holika, and son, Prahlad. Other legends associated with the festival include the legend of Shiva and Kaamadeva and those of Ogress Dhundhi and Pootana. All the stories show the triumph of good over evil, which is another special aspect of this festival. The story is that there was once a king who resented his son, Prince Prahlada, worshipping Lord Vishnu. He tries to murder the prince on several occasions but fails each time.

Finally, the king’s sister Holika who is said to be immune to burning sits with the boy inside a fire. However, the prince emerges unhurt, while his aunt burns in the fire and dies. Holi remembers this event, and huge bonfires are burnt on the eve of Holi as a symbolic representation. Holi is one of the major festivals of Hindus. It is celebrated in many parts of India, but especially in the north of India. The festival is celebrated for two to three days. People pour colored water on each other and cook many types of sweets and other food.

Holi is celebrated in spring season because it is welcoming spring. They believe spring is full of colors so they throw colored water on each other. The other day is celebrated with wonderful colors to mark the victory of asset and goodness over iniquity. The festival is celebrated for five days. The 5th day Rang Panchmi marks the closing day of Holi festival.
