Dhanteras marks the beginning of the 5-day long festival of Diwali. The festival is celebrated on the 13th lunar day of the dark fortnight (Krishna paksha) of the Hindu month Kartik and so it is also called as Dhantrayodashi. This year, Dhanteras falls on 22 Oct. It is followed by Choti Diwali, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj. The term Dhanteras is derived from the Hindi word 'Dhan', which means 'wealth'. On this day Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, fortune, beauty, fertility, and auspiciousness is worshipped. People buy valuable products like ornaments, gemstones, and metal household products, so the year following brings prosperity to their home and their life. As per legends, when the Devas and Asuras performed the Samudra Manthan, Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the ocean of milk carrying a jar of the elixir on this day.
